Field & Harvest Team Member

COMPENSATION: $2,500 per month + Whole Farm CSA share ($260 per month) + food/market trades

IDEAL START DATE:  As Soon As Possible—accepting applications on an ongoing basis

This is a full-time position located at Swallowtail Biodynamic Farm in Gainesville, Florida. Swallowtail is a community-supported family farm established in 2009. The farm is located on 28 gorgeous acres in the historic area of Rochelle. We provide CSA shares to around 100 households, and a series of 8 remarkable farm to table dinners each season. Noah and Melissa live on the farm with their children, livestock guardian (and other) dogs, and cats.

We are clear that we are farming for future generations and for the planet. Drawing from biodynamics, permaculture, and our own experience, we are using no-till methods, and are establishing and propagating permanent, layered diverse plantings of fruit trees, perennials, and annuals including fruits, vegetables, cut flowers and culinary and medicinal herbs. We use zero chemical inputs, and will be developing alternative energy sources as we are able.

We are seeking someone who would like to be with us farming for 1-2 seasons ideally, as we look to generate stability and consistency for ourselves and our loyal CSA community of 15 years. We have graduated approximately 35 folks from our apprenticeship program over the past 8 years, and many of them have gone on to start their own amazing farms and businesses. We continue to understand our role as mentors as a sacred responsibility - for the individuals we are mentoring, for our family, for our humble little farm, for our local community, for the craft of farming, and for the earth. Prior farming experience is not required for applying, but is highly preferred.

A Field & Harvest Team Member would work under the supervision and direction of Melissa, co-owner of the farm and Farm Manager, with some direction & supervision from Noah, co-owner and founder of the farm. Melissa is a strong, educated woman who is straightforward and has high expectations, and is also thoughtful and considerate. This position will involve working outdoors and in the fields. Some of the work will be with others completing tasks, and some of the work will include working independently of others. A Field & Harvest Team Member will participate in all aspects of harvesting, processing, and packing of produce, as well as field work part of the week, including seeding, transplanting, greenhouse monitoring, irrigation, cultivating, and more. The Field & Harvest Team Member will also be responsible for attending the Haile Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings. As a team member, we will also all participate in group projects that help further the farm as a whole, such as cleaning projects, carpentry projects, animal moves, and more. The work schedule for this position will be Tuesday through Friday, 7am-4pm with a 1 hour lunch break, and Saturdays 5:30am-1:30pm.

While this position begins with an introductory salary, we are very open to this person growing with us into a higher-salaried, managerial role with more responsibility if the right fit!

As such, of course, it is also a tremendous learning opportunity and the possibility for great autonomy and creative freedom. This is truly a sustainably-scaled, extraordinarily diversified community-supported farming operation. You can expect 2 days off per week, as well as 2 weeks (10 work days) of paid sick leave/vacation, and paid holidays. This position also provides farm lunches Tuesdays through Fridays, as well as veggies from the farm, animal products (milk, yogurt, and eggs), and farm-raised meat (pork & beef) depending on availability.

We use zero chemical inputs, and will be developing alternative energy sources as we are able.

We are seeking someone who would like to undertake an immersive learning opportunity under the supervision of the farm owners & Dairy/Livestock Manager for one full season at the farm (September through June). We have graduated approximately 35 folks from our prior, full-time apprenticeship program over the past 8 years, and many of them have gone on to start their own amazing farms and businesses. We continue to understand our role as mentors as a sacred responsibility - for the individuals we are mentoring, for our family, for our humble little farm and animals, for our local community, for the craft of farming, and for the earth. Prior farming experience is not required for applying, but a passion for sustainability, land stewardship, and animal husbandry are a must. Applicants must be comfortable working outdoors, early mornings, and with large animals (and the poop, dirt, and weed seeds that come along with it!).

A Livestock / Dairy Apprentice would work under the supervision and direction of Melissa and Noah, co-owners of the farm, and would work directly under and alongside our Dairy/Livestock Manager, Arlyce. This position will involve working outdoors with cows, pigs, chickens, and sheep. A Livestock / Dairy Apprentice would begin their first 2 months with close supervision and mentorship, as well as participating in weekly team meetings with all farmers to gain an understanding of our farm’s operation and dynamic. As the Apprentice gains more skills and learns certain tasks, they will be given more independent tasks and additional responsibility with the animals, with the possibility of spearheading or directing their own project/role in the second half of the season. The Apprentice will participate in tasks such as animal moves, electric fencing assembly, pasture fence repair/maintenance, irrigation work, feeding animals, animal health checks, pasture management, milking cows, and possibly creamery tasks. As a team member, we will also all participate in group projects that help further the farm as a whole, such as cleaning projects, carpentry projects, animal moves, and more. The work schedule for this position will be 3 days per week, preferably Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 7am-4pm with a 1 hour lunch break. We provide a farm fresh lunch each work day. If an applicant has different days of the week preferred, we are open to discussing different workday options.

While this position begins as an apprenticeship position, we are very open to this person growing with us into full-time position after the first season if the right fit!

As such, of course, it is also a tremendous learning opportunity and the possibility for great autonomy and creative freedom. This is truly a sustainably-scaled, extraordinarily diversified community-supported farming operation. This position also provides farm lunches on the workdays, as well as veggies from the farm, animal products (milk, yogurt, and eggs), and farm-raised meat (pork & beef) depending on availability.
